March 29, 2023 Newark Structure Fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire which occurred at 9252 Croppers Island Road in Newark.

The Newark Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a reported house fire at 11:12 AM. Upon arrival, crews experienced significant fire conditions throughout the two-story single-family home. Early into the incident, an evacuation of interior crews was ordered after a firefighter fell through the 2nd floor and the building partially collapsed.

Assistance was requested from Ocean City, Showell, Berlin, Stockton, Powellville and Willards fire departments. Firefighters spent 4.5 hours on scene bringing the fire under control and estimate they flowed over 50,000 gallons of water during the event.

The American Red Cross provided assistance for three adults who lived in the home. Unfortunately, over 20 animals were believed to have perished in the fire.

The exact cause of the fire is considered accidental believed to be contributed by a portable heating appliance. No injuries were reported.
